Snagglepuss Takes the Hammond Memorial  October 1st, 2007

I've been waiting awhile for them to finally post the result.  Looks like Snagglepuss beat Odyssey in the final match race of the season.  Good going all!   At least it appears there was some wind.....

4 Ducks Wins the Falls Oxford  September 24th, 2007

Wow, and we thought the Solomon's race was a sleigh ride.  With winds starting out at 13-15 at the start, building to 25+ in the gusts later in the day, Ducks was able to fly their chute off the start and get a jump on the fleet that they held to the end.  Swell was second and Pussycat took third.  Read all about it!

Jolly Mons wins the 2007 CBYRA Race Week  September 8th, 2007

Over 200 pics of Race week are here.  Check them out in the gallery. Make sure you hit the "Next" tab on the thumbnail window.  There are multiple pages of pictures.

Here is how the Capital reported it:

One of the more notable performances in the three-day regatta came from Julian Richards, who seemed well on the way to an impressive victory in Catalina 27 class before nearly suffering disaster.

Richards steered Jolly Mon to first or second place in five of six races before nearly losing his rig in a pre-start collision with fellow Catalina 27 Lazy Ethel. Miscommunication in a port-starboard situation caused the two boats to become entangled and Jolly Mon shredded her headstay in the accident. started five minutes late and was unable to fly a spinnaker in suffering a pair of deep results on Monday. Richards would have still won the regatta by a point, but filled for redress since CBYRA High Point standings count Annapolis Race Week as individual days.

"There would have been ramifications with regard to the High Point standings. Fortunately, the jury gave us average placement for the races that were affected," Richards said.'

Richards, who took a sabbatical from racing last year, earned his first Annapolis Race Week victory in six attempts. He praised the work of crew members Bill Smith (tactics), Ross Arnett (bow) and Mike Rickels (pit).

"We've sailed smart and put ourselves in the right position so far. We've also gotten some luck," he said Richards "If we sail smart (on Monday) we should be able to stay on top. But you never know with these types of conditions."

4 Ducks takes Solomon's by a Feather  July 27th, 2007

Ahhh.  The second "half" of the season begins.   Tradition is that July and August bring light breezes for a nice relaxing ride down the bay on a warm summer night.  Not this year!   Read all about it here.  I have a ton of pics delivered to me on 3 CDs of not only Solomon's, but several other "activities".  Look for them shortly!

BTW, an interesting tidbit is that Duck's average speed was 6.2755 knots, Jolly Mon's was 6.2686, the difference being less than 7/1000th's of a knot over 7 hours of racing.  How's that for one design!

Jolly Mons wins the Leukemia Cup Race  June 16th, 2007

The wind filled in, defying the predictions of a drifter, allowing two races both "won" by Jolly Mon. But it wasn't as simple as that.  The first race was an exercise in confusion as the RC set the windward mark shorter than announced and right next to the starting line of another race, causing many to sail past it or even to round the incorrect mark.  The RC didn't even have the finish line set when Jolly Mon finished making them to sail back around the RC boat.  In order to prevent the confusion on the second race, the RC moved the course heading to the left even though the breeze had clocked making the second race 1 beat, no jibe, twice around drag race.  Jolly Mon nipped a charging PussyCat at the end winning by a few inches in what the race committee said was the closest finish they had ever seen.  Congrats to Jolly Mon and his crew.

4 Ducks Wins the EYC OD in 3  June 16th, 2007

Tom Walsh and his crew on 4 Little Ducks, put on an impressive show at the EYC one design regatta.  Plenty of breeze, 3 races and short courses put a premium on crew work and boat handling.  Ducks excelled at them all...  Read all about it here.

What a Swell race -   June 16th, 2007

Here's Swell's write up for the Mile River Race.  Click here.   and one more for the Race Back.....  click here.

4 Ducks Takes the SSC Twilight Race  June 5th, 2007

Yes, there are too many ducks in the image.   But I can imagine looking at Tom Walsh and Crew during the race,  going downwind, under spinnaker, in 28 knot gusts, 4 Ducks probably looked like 6.  Read all about it here.  BTW,  Tom is the first winning skipper to do a write up this year.  What gives????

Swell Drifts her way to the Peter Gookin Award  May 28th, 2007

Battling their way through the light air over the Memorial Day weekend, John Anderson and crew aboard Swell took two bullets on the race to and from the Miles River Yacht Club to win the Peter Gookin Memorial trophy in a  convincing manner.  The race over average a stunning 1.92 knots for Swell, not quite making the requirement for the race to count for High Point.   The race back was only slightly better, averaging 2.5 knots.  Hell, I could have walked there faster.  From what I hear, kudos go to MRYC for making the on-shore festivities echo what they once were years ago.

Snagglepuss Navigates to First in St. Brendan's Cup May 15th, 2007

The Zahn's & crew battled back after being spit out the back-end of a six boat wide rounding at the last mark and found some zephyrs of wind in the dying breeze to take the gun.  Pussycat, who seemed to be sparring with them at the end (the author was too far back to see it clearly) ended up second.  Lazy Ethel, who had a similar fate as Snagglepuss in that rounding with the entire fleet, ended up third after finding something back out in the bay and passing most of the fleet.   Excellent job to all!!!!

BTW, Rule 17.1 is what was in play when all six boat were overlapped coming to the mark (but before the 2-boat length circle)......

JollyMon wins Catalina Class at NOODs May 10th, 2007

You wouldn't know it from the formal SailingWorld write-up on on the regatta results since the class was not even mentioned....but JollyMon won with a scoring line of 2,1,2,1-6 to beat out the runner-up 4 Little Ducks (1,2,1,4-8) by 2 points on the last race.   Special kudos go out to the Bow Movement team from Norfolk who showed impressive speed (even with the inboard) to take third place.  Next up is St. Brendan's Cup this coming weekend!

BTW, and informal poll was taken last Wednesday night after the race (and several drinks) and it appears that there is the potential for 5-6 Catalina's to be at Screwpile this year.  Are you one of them?

CANCELLED!  And the Season Begins...... April 6th, 2007

A note went out last week on the email-list about the Oyster Stew tune up session and we have very little response.  As a reminder this has always been a GREAT way to shake off the cobwebs before WNR starts the following Wednesday night and before it blows like hell the following weekend for NOODs.    Even if you boat isn't 100% ready, there are no points associated just a great way to get out and have a practice session before.

We are also planning on doing the Fun Race that was canceled in the fall just after the Oyster Stew session.  Again a fun way to get in synch with your crew without any stress.  The RC will throw serious curves at the skippers to keep the "race" interesting.   Scheduled date is Saturday, 4/21 with a rain date of Sunday 4/22.   We will follow the festivities up with more festivities at Davis' directly following the Fun Race.

Incidentally the Spinsheet Crew Listing Party is also the 22nd, so lets hope for good weather on the 21st.  But I would hope that the tuning session would be of much more interest for most of us than a few free beers.    Of course if we get the tuning session off on Saturday, please join us for the Crew Listing Party.

Race instructions for the Oyster Stew Tune-up can be seen here.

2007 Site Refresh March 18th, 2007

Several things on the website were showing their age, so I have started an update that I think will make it a bit more user friendly.  Most notably is a complete replacement of the forum.  We're back to a more robust version that requires you to register, but is also much more functional, easier for me to maintain, includes some neat features such a private areas for the fleet members and member polls, and most importantly it should prevent some of the spam.  Give it a spin, and feel free to email me with suggestions using the link on the menubar.
