Four Little Ducks wins AYC Frostbite 1st half

Tom Walsh and the crew aboard Four Little Ducks won the 1st Half of Frostbite at AYC. By winning all 10 races in the series they made a very convincing showing. Rick Crow and the crew aboard Crow’s Nest were second with Jim Urban and Catawampus placing third in a tie break with Carl Engel on Redrum. Toy Box and Makanai Kai II also participated in the series and all had fun.  Winds throughout the series ranged from 0.5 to 36 knots at times.

Catawampus wins Catalina 27 class at 2005 NOODs

Catawampus was able to put a boat between themselves and Swell to take the overall regatta for the class on the last of 7 races.  Four Little Ducks followed up in third place.   Results can be seen here.  Pictures from the awards party are in the gallery.

Finesse wins Catalina 27 class at 2005 St. Brendan's Cup

Finesse beat four other boats to take the Catalina 27 class at this year's St. Brendan's Cup.  New rules imposed this year disallowed the use of Loran or GPS to navigate the 12+ mile course.  Boats had to rely on dead-reckoning to find the marks around the bay.  Tom Walsh on Four Little Ducks took second with Red Rum right behind.  Tom is now leading the high point standings going into the Memorial Day weekend with the Miles River Race and the Race Back.

Gato wins race to St. Michaels, Ducks takes the Race Back and The Peter Gookin Memorial Trophy

Four Little Ducks won the Peter Gookin Memorial Trophy for the best Memorial Day weekend by placing 2nd in the race to St. Michaels, and 1st in the race back.  Gato won the race to St. Michaels in a nice breeze barely finishing by the time a wall cloud came through the fleet raising the wind speed to 25+ knots.  Hi Tide crawled their way back through the fleet to take 3rd after a lousy start.  During the race back on Sunday, twice the winds went flat causing the entire fleet to converge and restart the race.   The second time was within a 1/2 mile of the finish.  Ducks and Hi Tide were first to escape the dying sea breeze into the westerly coming out of the river to take first and second.  Pussycat went around the entire fleet to the north and took third.  Much fun and merriment were had at MRYC to include fleet racing of 8 ODOMs (1 meter model boats) off the pier.  It was great to see several boats out for their first High Point races of the year.  Next up, the Twilight race.

Hi Tide wins the C27 Class at the EYC One Design Classic

John Ebell's short handed team on Hi Tide took the gun in the first two of the three races and placed 2nd in the third to take the One Design classic by 1 point over Four Little Ducks.  Gato was third with three 3rd place finishes.  Boat handling was the theme of the day as the race committee set short 4 leg courses in wind that averaged about 10-15 knots.

Jolly Mon takes the Leukemia Cup

Julian and his crew took a flier on the last windward leg to jump past five boats and take a commanding lead to the finish line.  With 3 of the 4 leading boats for High Point missing, it was great to still see 10 Catalina's at the start  Swell was 2nd, and Pussycat took 3rd.  With 9 of 16 races completed, Four Little Ducks has a commanding lead for High Point, but Swell and Catawampus are still within hunting range going into the Solomon's weekend, especially with the bonus points up for grab.   For a complete summary of the scoring, click here.

Pussycat wins the Overnight Solomon's Race

Gato had the lead at 1AH and at R76.  The lead changed several times in the last leg across the bay as Gato and Pussycat searched for patches of breeze.  Mark and his crew on Pussycat finally gained the lead for good after being first to raise their spinnaker as the breeze backed to a beam reach in the river. The first three finishers all reported that they favored the east side of the rhumb line during the race. The first five boats finished within eleven minutes of each other after more than twelve and a half hours of racing.  Swell took Third Place.  Click here to see pictures taken at the start as the light faded. Vikings converge on Screwpile, Swell dominates the racing

AHHHHOOOOOAHHHHHHOOOOOO.  "I hear the mating call of the Catalina 27 fleet".  You can't deny that the Catalina 27 fleet had the most fun at Screwpile 2005. Being dubbed by the North Fleet Principle Race Officer at the final awards party as her favorite fleet was a testament to the infectious fun that the fleet had at the parties, out on the water waiting for the wind, and during the races.  Rich Wallio, Miles Wallio, John Ebell, Mike Rickels borrowed John Anderson's Swell and racked up a 1-1-2-1 line to take first place in Class 14.  Gato was 2nd and Four Little Dxcks was 3rd.  Click here to see pictures taken at the parties.

John Anderson & Swell win CBYRA Race Week

Finally a race week with wind.  Swell held on on during the last of six race to take the weekend by 2 points.  Hi Tide was 2nd, with Four Little Ducks 3rd. Click here to see 300+ pictures taken  on the first day.  They are in sequential order starting with the first start. The start sequence for the second race is something that can't be missed.  If you want full resolution copies of any of the pictures, note the file number on the URL and send me an email here.

Tom Walsh wins Catalina 27 CBYRA High Point Championship for 2005

Tom Walsh and his crew onboard Four Little Ducks held onto their lead through the light air Oxford weekend to win the overall championship for the 2nd year in a row.  John Anderson on Swell was second in the High Point standings and John Ebell on Hi Tide was third.  The start of the Oxford weekend was a tortuous affair with the top three boats in the high point standings leading the race to Oxford at one point or another until the wind completely died and it became apparent the race would not finish within the time limit.  Unfortunately the race committee did not take advantage of two opportunities to shorten the race and in the end, less than a handful of boats finished the race of the ~180 that started.  The race back had barely enough wind to finish with Jim Urban on Catawampus taking the gun over Fran Wright on Cheshire Cat.
